Acai is a berry of an Amazonian palm tree that has been in the eye of the public for a great period of time, specifically with its usage in Brazil. It has recently gained attention for its capabilities of assisting with weight loss and has many running to the store to begin their own acai berry diet.

Dr. Perricone highlighted the acai berry as the number one antioxidant food available on the Oprah show not long ago. And as with anything else that is mentioned on the Oprah show, this berry quickly exploded. To take it a step further, Oprah herself even mentioned she has included it into her diet.

The acai berry is often promoted for its antioxidant effects as they greatly exceed any other foods that are high in antioxidants like blueberries and red wine. In addition, they are said to improve digestion, cleansing and detoxifying the body, boosting of the immune system, increase mental clarity, and slow down the aging process.

As for the acai berry diet, those speaking highly say the berry has a combination of essential fatty acids, amino acids and phytosterols that work to improve metabolism, enhance digestion and reduce the overall appetite. But with all of the good must come a little bad as well, right?

There have been a number of reports of scams with web sites selling products and then billing customers for so-called free trials of this product. It is crucial you know what you are getting and trust the source. Other cons include the fact that claims made for weight loss effects are unsubstantiated, it does not encourage dieters to make overall lifestyle changes, and it can become quite expensive.

With that said, there is a great deal of positive light to look forward to. There has been scientific research that supports some of the health claims that are made for acai berry and the acai berry diet. While not everything is 100% proven just yet, many of the claims have been proven.

As mentioned above, the berry is very high in antioxidants, which can reduce the risk of diseases that come with aging. This is not to say you will never have cardiovascular disease or cancer, but it can work in your favor.

And as for those dieters looking to lose weight, antioxidants are extremely beneficial if you stay physically active as it will work to neutralize the free radicals that are produced during exercise. In addition, a lot of people on an acai berry diet say they have greater energy levels and have a reduced appetite.

There is still research being conducted to this day on all of the effects this diet can have, but the future looks bright. And if Oprah herself is including it into her diet, something has to be good about it.
