Amethyst is the well-known birthstone designated for the month of February. It is a bluish red crystal of the mineral quartz. Quartz's basic constitution is SiO2.

Amethyst has a refraction index of between 1.544 and 1.553 and a hardness of 7. The refractive index of a stone indicates how speedily light can transit through the jewel compared to light's velocity in a vacuum, and is one of the first tests used to analyze a stone. The mohs hardness scale goes up to 10, which is the hardness of diamonds. So Amethyt's mohs hardness of 7 makes it a reasonably sturdy jewel.

The word Amethyst comes from the Greek 'amethusos' meaning 'not drunken' and the jewel might have been felt to prevent the side effects of intoxication. Some manuscripts also express that there was a historical notion that Amethyst could safeguard against poisoning.

In present times, the widespread meaning and symbology of amethyst is one of metaphysical contentment. It is very advantageous as a rock of protection as it cancels out bad energy. It is also believed to nourish the union and communication between the mind, physical, soul and other realms. People who desire to become more adaptable and accept new ideas more readily often opt to put on Amethyst gemstones for these qualities.

Even though always purple colored, amethysts can come in differing distinct hues of Purple. The exact hue and depth of purple in a deposit of amethyst is ofttimes dependant on where it is found. Its crystal arrangement can be found as a six sided pyramid, or as a collection of small crystals inside a geode.

Amethysts are mined in Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, Africa, Italy, Russia and numerous regions of the USA, among them Maine, Colorado, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Leaving aside the location they are in reality from though, Amethysts are frequently grouped as Siberian, Uruguayan or Bahrain in order to suggest the quality of the stone; Great, medium and lesser grades, respectively.

Quartz Amethyst can be cut in a wide range of ways, though is generally cut in an attempt to boost the effect of its inherent coloration. Some popular forms for Amethysts are as faceted gemstones, as cabochons, carvings such as flower decorations, beads and tumbled nuggets, or even geometric forms such as globes, or slices of amethyst filled geodes.

Exposure to sunlight or high temperatures causes the color of amethysts to lose quality. You should not use chemicals like household cleaners or hairspray on amethysts. A soft toothbrush or cloth and a solution of mild dish soap and warm water can be used to cautiously rub the stone. You can also launder it with an in-home ultrasonic machine.

By reason of the dyes essential to manufacture the color purple were frequently unusual and costly purple became the dye most often used to represent royalty and as such amethysts have many times been used to trim the clothing of many moneyed and powerful individuals throughout history. in modern times on the other hand, amethyst gemstones are very affordable and commonly accessible.
