Costumes have always been an intrinsic part of our cultures. In fact, they are said to denote a lot of things. In many cultures and civilizations, each class of the society wore similar costumes but made up of different material. The material itself would tell the others the class to which the wearers belong to. Even the civilization of Rome is not untouched by this phenomenon. Roman costumes have been influenced by both Greek as well as Egyptians.
Types of women’s clothing:
The costumes for adults, especially Roman women were slightly different than men in Rome. Here are a few elements of a standard woman’s clothing of Roman origin:
>> Intusium (worn under the tunic)
>> Strophium (bodice worn at the bust)
>> Stola (full length tunic worn by married women)
>> Palla (a shawl or sorts worn over)
Characteristics of Roman women’s clothing:
The original and the most popular material used for sexy costumes for women was primarily wool but people belonging to high class and riches also preferred clothes made up of cotton, silk, linen etc. This differentiation in terms of material of clothes was to showcase the difference in classes and social status of the people. Some of the sexy women’s costumes were also to signify their marital status. For example, the Stola was a type of apparel worn only by married women from the day of their marriage. One of the most remarkable facts about roman clothing was that these were basically rectangular pieces of clothes and were woven on a loom. However, clothing of different shapes was also manufactured.
Relevance of Roman Costumes in today’s scenario:
Today, though such clothes are no longer in use commonly but the Roman costumes for women have surely captured the imagination of the fashion industry across the globe. Various adaptations have been made to ensure that the present generation of women would find such clothes wearable. The fashion designers have adapted and made these clothes in such a way that they can be worn at parties, formal places as well as offices. In today’s world, these sexy costumes for women have become an inspiration for others to follow. The world’s best designers have a separate collection of inspired fashionable Roman clothing for women.
For the people of Rome, their costumes were a way to symbolize a lot of things. Roman costumes were indicative of their age, gender, social status and occupation. Women too had interesting costumes to their credit. These costumes were regal and looked very impressive. Though these costumes are not used today but are still useful during the staging of plays based in Rome, Shakespearean plays or theme parties.
