The positive effect of acupuncture in treating subfertility may be related to the central sympathetic inhibition by the endorphin system, the change in uterine blood flow, and anxiety reduction. Acupuncture may help restore ovulation for patients suffering from polycystic ovary syndromePOS, although there are not sufficient randomized controlled trials to confirm this. There is also no sufficient data supporting the function of acupuncture in term of male subfertility, since most studies are uncontrolled case reports or case series in which the sample sizes were extremely small. Despite the deficiencies, acupuncture may still be considered an effective choice for pain relief during oocyte retrieval in patients who cannot bear side effects of conscious sedation. The pregnancy rate after in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure is substantially increased, especially when acupuncture is administered on the day of embryo transfer (ET).
