Ayr is a medium sized town on the West coast of Scotland. It is a thriving centre of activity, and there are many attractions on offer in the town, both for locals and tourists. The town was home to the first ever Scottish Parliament, which was held in 1315, and still serves as an important and integral town in Ayrshire.
1. Ayr United FC.
One of the main attractions of the town, and one of the biggest sources of income to the local economy. Currently, the club play out of Somerset Park, a small stadium in the town of Ayr. The club are known for their fierce competitiveness against their local rivals Kilmarnock, and games against their rivals are always fast paced and frenetic matches. Visitors to the town are advised to take in a match, and sample the delights of an Ayrshire derby, and maybe treat yourself to one of the famous Killie pies and a Bovril.
2. Prestwick Golf Club.
Known as 'The Home of the Open', Prestwick Golf Club is one of the most highly renowned golf courses in the world. The course neighbours a number of smaller courses which act as qualifying courses for the final stages of the open. The course is open to visiting tourists who wish to pit their skills against this traditional links course. Green fees are in keeping with what you would expect of a club of this stature. Golfers will also be very interested in the displays in the clubhouse which relate to the history of the course, including a large section which tells the story of the history of the Open Championship, which was itself started in Prestwick in 1860.
3. Glasgow Prestwick Airport
Glasgow Prestwick is a large airport based in the town of Prestwick. It is currently an airport which serves a large volume of commercial freight, and a fairly large number of passengers. The airport is well known for having been the only place in Britain which Elvis Presley ever set foot on, in 1960. Fans of aircraft and Elvis Presley alike will want to take some time to visit the airport and see the place in action.
4. Ayr Racecourse
Ayr Racecourse opened up in 1907, and has been a mainstay of the town ever since. The racecourse itself is approximately 13 furlongs in circumference, and can play host to both flat and National Hunt racing. The racecourse plays host to the Ayr Gold Cup and the Scottish Derby. Those who do not particularly enjoy the sport might enjoy a visit to the market which is held at the racecourse every Sunday. Visitors to the market can find a wide variety of items and services on offer here.
5. Ayr town centre
Ayr town centre itself is a location which visitors might want to spend some time in. It is ideally located for close proximity to the beach in Ayr, and is served by a wide variety of Ayr shops, Ayr markets, Ayr restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs, even local Ayr builders and assorted other businesses which are of value to both locals and visitors to the area.
