A just published survey found that among Europeans, British holidaymakers are the best planners, often booking holidays four months in advance while other countries see their citizens book much closer to the time they want to go away.
But whether it's a holiday in 2011 you're looking into, or one this side of the New Year, planning a trip and researching local facilities has never been easier or more informative thanks to the internet.
And as well as seeing what local areas are like for those looking for somewhere new, reviews can be read about the hotels available from people who have just visited, taking the guesswork out of where to stay, and prompting those hotels who do fall below the standard most holidaymakers expect to hopefully improve their performance.
The other benefit of booking and researching a holiday is price, with different companies competing to get the business - and the price difference between those online holidays and those offered by traditional travel agencies is apparently wider than ever before, according to a new report.
One example was for for holidays in Menorca this summer, with the media speculating that prices would be slashed in August with many Menorca holidays remaining unsold by leading tour operators.
But the reality proved to be something else. Menorca did sell well, but it was mainly via on-line travel companies rather than High Street travel agencies, who weren't able to compete against the internet prices.
Leading UK based Menorca holidays travel site yourmenorca.net for example say they saw a surge in bookings in August, with most bookings going to Thomson, First Choice and Thomas Cook.
The advantage for those booking a trip online is clear - people can flit between travel sites to find not just the best deals but the most convenient flight times and local airport for their flights to Menorca, similarly for accommodation, and save money on both, while in a High Street store some travel agents might be reluctant to spend as much time doing research as their potential client can at home.
With some small holiday companies going to the wall in 2010 the company also noticed more holidaymakers playing safe and booking with travel firms that are household names such as First Choice, Thomas Cook and Thomson Holidays.
The well known travel companies tend to have good internet sites, with not just descriptions and prices of flights and hotels, but also other resources, in Menorca's case for example videos of the towns and villages, the weather, reviews from past clients and a map of Menorca among other things.
So along with better prices than the High Street, perhaps it's no surprise perhaps that some estimates suggest that over half of British people who were looking to book a trip abroad this summer opted to do so on-line.
After all, you can spend half an hour reading reviews of accommodation and Menorca hotels at home in the evening to check that where you intend to book is as good as it sounds before finally paying - while in a travel agency the chances are that none of the staff have stayed in the same hotel as you recently - and would there opinions be as unbiased as those from people who have stayed there recently and have nothing to gain from which of the Menorca hotels you opt for?
