There is something almost mystical and magical about the world under the ocean, where the colourful reefs and rich marine life offer aquatic adventures. It is not surprising that so many people want to dive down to the depths to swim amongst the dolphins and other magnificent ocean creatures. Even snorkelling can give a clear view of what lies beneath the surface.
Australia has long been a special underwater paradise of tropical waters. Here, a huge variety of different species of fish migrates each year and can not only be seen up close but can be swum alongside on scuba diving trips. The ocean might be vast but so is the abundance of life under the water and the corals and reefs are what attracts the fish. However, as beautiful as this ecosystem is, it is also fragile and ecotourism is about showcasing and protecting the ocean as a habitat.
Experienced ocean odyssey organisers, who understand where different fish will be found and when, can provide a perfect way of diving under the surface and getting the most out of an underwater adventure. Coral regions such as Ningaloo Reef attract the largest species of plankton eating fish that exist, the whale sharks, and trips which take divers out to spend time with these huge, gentle fish should also respect and value their power, beauty and role in the marine world.
It is such an awe-inspiring experience to see these wonderful spotted and striped animals. They are so gentle and let divers come close as well as allowing them to interact and play with them too. However, there are threats to the natural habitats of these docile marine animals and there is no doubt that anyone interested in plunging the depths of the ocean does not want to wreak havoc at the same time.
Ecotourism is about giving back to a habitat, whether in terms of research or donations. It is also about understanding the need to tread carefully and the overwhelming efforts that are sometimes involved in protecting a species which gives people so much joy. The oceans of the world are vulnerable and for many divers and nature lovers, a company which involved in acting in the interests of ecotourism is an attractive way of discovering a hidden landscape. It is also a way of helping out with something they have had the lucky opportunity to be part of.
